Geoffrey Commander doesn't fit the profile of Anonymous. Some might say he fits the profile of a hacktivist.
He's a successful musician who made a living playing guitar for ELO and Elton John. But at 66, he began to experiment with the term hacktivist.
According to the indictment issued last October, Geoffrey Commander was one of a group of 13 defendants who hacked the websites of Bank of America, Mastercard, as part of Anonymous' Operation Payback.
Commander and his 12 co-defendants did not have as high a profile as the PayPal 13, who were brought to trial around the same time, but they are charged with the same crime: using a freely available tool called LOIC (short for Low Orbit Ion Cannon) to take part in a denial-of-service attack.
According to TheVerge, Commander now lives in England, but was arrested while on vacation in the United States and sentenced this week. The judge downgraded Commander’s charge to a misdemeanor, and he was sentenced to just 10 days in jail.
Commander said he sees the denial-of-service attack as a form of protest against the banks that “brought his country to its knees.”
