It seems that security researchers UNH Cyber Forensics Research & Education Group, after their report on the unencrypted form of each user's data as we saw in our previous article , got the people of Viber thinking , and not only!
Viber has finally added measures to encrypt messages on its Android and iOS app, so that snoopers on the network can't see images, videos, and messages about each user's broader location.
The new Android version 4.3.1.21, released on Tuesday, reportedly includes :
Improvements to the way Viber handles photos, videos and messages, according to the Viber page for the Google Play App Store. The iOS version of Viber has remained unchanged since April 23, but Viber last week said it was preparing a fix for the version. On Wednesday, the company said the fix had been sent to Apple.
Because unencrypted images and videos from a user's previous version of Viber are not actually private. Someone with control of the Viber network can view or even modify them. So they added the SecureMe software and so when an unauthorized person goes to view it on a Wi-Fi network, it will show them an image that says "protected by SecureMe" and will be replaced with the existing image that would have been there. In addition, we should inform you that they stated that messages between users are encrypted.
Viber responded to Dan Hawke :
“Currently, the only data that is encrypted is text messages. Phone numbers and contact information are not encrypted. In every connection that is made when someone calls, their call is encrypted, but the call itself (which is the audio data) is not encrypted. We are currently developing a secure end-to-end secure call feature that will encrypt all calls.”
