Pirate Bay's Peter Sunde, candidate for European Parliament seat

In two months, citizens of all member states of the European Union will vote on who will represent them in the European Parliament. The pirate parties will of course not be absent from the contest and it seems that they are running with strong candidates such as Peter Sunde.

Finland, for example, has one of the most important candidates, Peter Sunde, founder of the Pirate Bay, who will run for the European Pirate Party as a candidate for the European Parliament.

Although he is serving a prison sentence for his involvement in The Pirate Bay, Peter Sunde is determined to fight for the European Parliament in Brussels.

The former Pirate Bay spokesperson announced the plans last year, and it looks like his idea is starting to take shape. Sunde is one of 19 candidates on the Pirates of Finland ballot.

Unlike other countries, the Finnish candidate lists are not ranked, meaning there is no single lead candidate. However, due to his involvement with the Pirate Bay, Sunde is without a doubt the most recognizable name on the ballot.
In a statement to TorrentFreak, he stated:

“If I am elected, I will go and fix the bugs of the European Union. We should restart this thing called democracy and make it work.”

Sunde is quite optimistic and believes that the Pirate Party can pull off a surprise entry into the European Parliament. If elected, Sunde hopes to overhaul current copyright legislation and legalize file-sharing.

“Non-commercial file sharing should of course be made legal and protected, and we need to rethink copyright all together. Copyright is not what makes artists money, it’s only for their brokers and distributors,” Sunde previously said.
