A camera the size of a pill was approved by the FDA as an alternative solution for patients who are unable to undergo colonoscopy.
The capsule has a camera at both ends. For navigation through the patient's intestines it requires a period of 8 hours. Throughout the “journey¨ it captures high‑speed photographs which are then sent to a device examined by the doctor, as Mashable reported.
The device is not intended to replace colonoscopy, but to be used in combination with it. Its price is around $500.
PillCam has been approved in 80 other countries, except the USA.
