China's internet outage was likely a cyberattack

China

China recently suffered an internet outage that experts believe may have been caused by a cyberattack.

During the outage, users were redirected to a website run by
Dynamic Internet Technology (DIT), which provides anti-censorship services specifically designed for China.

The company is also affiliated with the Falun Gong group , a spiritual group that has been accused of cyberattacks in the past.

Representatives of Internet Network Information Center said the outage was caused by a malfunction in the top-level domain name root servers.

Chinese security experts told the Xinhua news agency that the incident could be the result of a hack.

DIT founder Bill Xia told Reuters that the Chinese government may have misused its Internet censorship system and blocked all websites, not just those it normally bans. But he said DNS could have been compromised, as even if users tried to visit non-existent sites, they were redirected to his organization’s website. He disputes that Falun Gong hackers were responsible for the outage, and he does not know why they redirected users to his company’s website.
