Apple stepped in and removed eight iOS Bitcoin wallet apps that seemed suspicious and some users accused them of stealing their funds.
The applications are GreenAddress, Simple Bitcoin Wallet, Simple Bitcoin Wallet™, GreenBits Bitcoin Wallet, Bitcoin Wallet, Bitcoin Armory Wallet, Blockchain – Offline Bitcoin Wallet and BitcoinCore – Bitcoin Wallet.
A Breadwallet employee discovered these apps after noticing that someone had used his company's icon and title to create a fake app that was being marketed as the official Breadwallet iOS app
“A fake Breadwallet app using the same title and icon as the real Breadwallet made it through Apple’s review process and was added to the App Store on July 29,” wrote on Reddit using the username breadwallet_dan. “We took immediate action and removed it, although some users who accidentally downloaded the fake app reported having their funds stolen through it.”
After reporting the fake Breadwallet clone, he also searched the iOS App Store for similar fake products that imitate the company's official app, and thus discovered the eight apps mentioned above.
All of these applications used parts of the Breadwallet source code or visual cues in an attempt to confuse ordinary users and pass it off as the original, in an obvious attempt to trick and defraud users.
It's unclear whether these apps ended up stealing funds, but it's almost clear that the people behind these obvious fake products didn't have the user's best interests in mind.
Fake apps are a big problem for both Apple and Google .On Monday, antivirus maker Dr.Web warned users that someone had uploaded two fake Dr.Web apps to iTunes.
