What do we do when life gives us advanced technology and a very cute puppy? Of course we teach our furry friend how to send us selfies with text!

The executives at cloud communications company Twilio have created a box, powered by an Arduino Yun, that will allow your dog to send you selfies.

Greg Baugues, a developer at Twilio, decided that teaching Kaira, his puppy, how to turn on the light switch wasn't enough and took it to the next level by teaching her how to press a button that would take a selfie of herself and text it to him.

So Baugues shows us below how we could teach our dog this technological hack.

What you will need:

Using a few easy-to-find materials, some basic programming, and the Twilio service, Baugues created a gadget that allows his puppy to take her own photos.

  • Box
  • Arduino Yun, $75
  • Big Red Button, $10
  • Webcam, $30
  • Twilio phone number, $1 per month

How to make it:

  1. Attach the big red button to the top of the box
  2. Connect the Arduino to the big red button, the power source, and the camera
  3. Connect to Arduino from your laptop via Wi-Fi
  4. Write a short text that sends an MMS with Twilio
  5. Write and upload an Arduino Sketch that runs the script when the button is pressed
  6. Finally, give your dog lots of treats until he understands what you mean by the word "selfie!"

There you go! your puppy is ready for Instagram!
