They will bring many billions to the space

2014 is just around the corner and as usually happens at this time of year, just before the next one arrives, many people, in addition to taking stock of the past year, are making plans/thoughts/dreams about what they wish the new year to bring them.

Some ask for money, others for love, another promotion, etc. or all of these (and even more) together.

If what you're looking for in the new year is... money... lots of money... thousands... hundreds of thousands... millions... billions (this is where things start to get out of hand), Business Insider has listed the technology trends (according to market research firm IDC) that will "generate"... many billions of dollars in 2014.

1. People and companies will spend $2.1 trillion on technology.
Global technology spending will grow 5% next year, according to IDC. People and companies will buy more smartphones and tablets, with the market growing by 15%. Companies will spend heavily on new equipment that works better with mobile devices.

The only thing they won't buy is more PCs. Worldwide PC revenue will fall 6% in 2014.

2. Countries outside the US and Europe will... "fall flat on their faces" on technology.

Emerging markets such as Brazil, Russia, India and China (the so-called BRICs) will increase their spending on technology equipment by 13% next year, with China being... a leader in this sector.

Other countries in Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa will take the same path for the first time.

The amounts spent outside the US and Europe in the technology sector will show an increase of 10% (nearly $740 billion) and will exceed 1/3 of the global turnover.

3. Businesses will “pour money” into the cloud.

IDC predicts that in 2014 $100 billion will be spent on the cloud, recording a 25% increase compared to 2013.

4. Amazon and Google will start a “war” for the cloud.

More cloud services will be created for specific industries.

IDC expects Amazon Web Services to be a leader in the field, creating an avalanche of services for manufacturers and enterprises, with Google stepping up its efforts.

5. Microsoft's future is at stake.
The rise of mobile devices will continue in 2014. Tablet sales will increase by 18% and smartphones by 12%. By the end of 2013, $423.1 billion will have been spent on smartphones and tablets priced under $350.

Apple and Samsung will continue to dominate the space. But in 2014, Android manufacturers will start to make more money, but they won't overtake iOS manufacturers.

2014 is the year Microsoft should "do" something.

6. Social networking software will decline.
Social networking in businesses will decline. Companies will not be as interested in buying chat applications, because the service will be offered to them with other applications that they will buy.

7. Crowd-funded innovations (crowdsourcing) will increase.
Instead of building a service with their own resources, companies (mainly startups) will turn to the public for funding (so-called crowdsourcing).
