Twitter co-founder and new CEO Jack Dorsey has filed for an initial public offering in the US for his mobile payments company, Square.
The number of shares to be offered and the price range for the offering have not yet been determined, Square said in a press release.
The startup says it aims to “enable anyone with a mobile device to accept card payments, anywhere, anytime.”
Reports have valued the technology company, founded in 2009, at $6bn (£3.87bn).
In the mobile payment company's filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Mr Dorsey said: "We have built one of the best and most efficient payments businesses in the world.".
"We made it possible to accept card payments in less than five minutes," he added.
He finished by noting: “We intend to make it great!”
Square said in an SEC filing that its total net revenue rose to $560.6m for the six months to June, up from $371.9m in the same period a year earlier.
The company, which has been described as a mobile payment, said the growth of its business would depend on its executives and employees, but warned that Mr. Dorsey's role as Twitter's CEO "may at times negatively impact his ability to devote time, attention and effort to Square."
Earlier this month, Twitter confirmed Mr. Dorsey as the company's permanent CEO. He had served as the company's interim CEO for three months after Dick Costolo resigned on July 1.
Twitter had previously said the CEO job would be a full-time position, which appears to rule out Mr. Dorsey as long as he continues to own Square.
Mr. Dorsey also sits on the board of directors of The Walt Disney Company.
