NATO joins Microsoft's Government Security Program

To improve the security of its data, the NATO Communications and Information (NCI) Agency announced that it will “take a closer look” at Microsoft’s security software.

NATO has signed a Government Security Program (GSP) agreement with Microsoft, extending the two organizations' 12-year partnership , the software giant announced in a statement.

GSP is a program that provides governments with vulnerabilities, threat protection from Microsoft, along with other resources to help organizations protect their data from hackers.

“It is open to government agencies, independent of the commercial contract with Microsoft, and is an important part of what we believe is our duty as global citizens,” said Glenn Pittaway, senior director of Trustworthy Computing Government and Industry at Microsoft, in a statement on September 14.

“NATO faces new and increasingly dangerous cybersecurity threats around the world, and these threats could affect national economies and citizens,” said Koen Gijsbers, NCI Agency General Manager, in a statement.

“To avoid this, the NCI Agency strongly believes in sharing threat and vulnerability information with global leaders such as Microsoft for rapid and timely information. Trust is the key to success.”

For Microsoft, this agreement is part of an ongoing effort to promote data security in Europe, according to Jan Neutze, director of Cybersecurity Policy at Microsoft EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa).
