Facebook introduces new tool to keep its users safe. Facebook Security Checkup
Facebook introduces Security Checkup, which provides account login status, login alerts, and password security features.
Facebook, continuing its efforts to help its users stay safe on the social network, is introducing the Security Checkup tool. The new tool includes account login status, login alerts, and password security features.
Login status is an important part of Facebook account security. Users can log in to the site from multiple locations and devices, but they can also forget they’re logged in. The Security Checkup tool shows users where they’ve logged in from so they can see which devices they’ve forgotten about – or potentially notice a device that’s not under jurisdiction .
Unfortunately, like some online services, the social network does not currently have a feature to log out the user after a certain period of inactivity.
Facebook credentials can also be used to gain access to third-party sites and applications, but this feature is not part of the Security Checkup tool.
The Facebook Privacy Checkup is a separate tool introduced in September 2014 as a way to help users with configuring their privacy settings.
The new Security Checkup tool has an additional login feature called login alerts. With login alerts, users of the popular social network can choose to be notified if someone tries to log into their account from a browser or device that has not previously attempted to log into that particular Facebook user account.
The third element of the security checkup tool is aimed at password security. Facebook also supports two-factor authentication with a feature called Login Approvals, which has been part of the platform since 2011.
With Login Approvals, users receive a text message with a unique code that must be entered on the Facebook login screen in order to gain access to their account.
Another capability of Facebook's famous platform that the Security Checkup tool doesn't currently support is malware scanning on users' systems. Facebook has multiple partnerships with security providers, including major companies like ESET, F-Secure, and Trend Micro, for malware scanning.
