The Innovating for Privacy event , which took place on Monday, April 27, at the University of Piraeus , was completed with great success .
The event was organized by the Master's Program in Digital Systems Security of the University of Piraeus in collaboration with SecNews.gr, the journalistic network oikomedia.com and the excellent Elina Makry, the Free Software/Open Source Software Association (ESLA, eellak.gr) and SciFY (www.scify.gr). The aim of the event was to inform the public about privacy and security issues on the internet, as well as to present the solutions and benefits offered by open source software.
The event was prefaced by Associate Professor of the University of Piraeus, Mr. Christos Xenakis, who referred to research and development activities in the field of systems and network security in Greece.
This was followed by a lecture by Mr. Arjen Kamphuis, an expert in internet security and data protection, who referred to practical issues of Personal Data protection.
During the lecture and while presenting rich visual material, Mr. Kamphuis delved into the following issues:
- The control of information processing in Greece, in light of the revelations of Edward Snowden, former information systems administrator for the American National Security Agency (NSA).
- On the issue of mass surveillance, targeted theft and abuse of citizens' data by governments, as well as the commercial exploitation of information by third parties.
- The solutions and benefits offered to Greek public institutions and Greek businesses by a technological policy based on open source software: how the installation of Greek software and IT services will enable the development of local jobs, entrepreneurship, and the development of knowledge and innovation.
The event concluded with Mr. Kamphuis answering a number of questions and discussing with the students.
