Innovating for Privacy: April 27th event on security issues
On Monday, April 27, from 18:00-21:00, the Master's degree program in Digital Systems Security of the University of Piraeus, in collaboration with SecNews.gr, the journalistic network oikomedia.com, the Free Software/Open Source Software Association (EEL/LAK, eellak.gr) and SciFY (www.scify.gr), are organizing an event on privacy issues, personal data security on the internet and the solutions offered by open source software, at the Conference Hall (Orange Amphitheater) of the University of Piraeus, (Karaoli & Dimitriou 80 in Piraeus, map).
event Innovating for Privacy will be Mr. Arjen Kamphuis, an expert in online security and data protection.
The Innovating for Privacy event will be introduced by Associate Professor of the University of Piraeus, Mr. Christos Xenakis , who will report on research and development activities in the field of systems and network security in Greece.
Next, Mr. Kamphuis, will discuss practical issues of Personal Data protection such as:
- the control of information processing in Greece, in light of the revelations of Edward Snowden, former information systems administrator for the American National Security Agency (NSA).
- on the issue of mass surveillance, targeted theft and misuse of citizens' data by governments as well as the commercial exploitation of information by third parties.
- the solutions as well as the benefits it offers to Greek public institutions and Greek businesses, a technological policy based on open source software: how the installation of Greek software and IT services will enable the development of local jobs, entrepreneurship, and the development of knowledge and innovation.
A workshop will follow during which Mr. Arjen Kamphuis will demonstrate encryption methods and tools for electronic communications, emails, and other transactions.
The event Innovating for Privacy is aimed at computer programmers, students, journalists, citizens interested in privacy and security issues on the internet , computer scientists , IT professionals and tech policy makers , etc.

Mr. Arjen Kamphuis is the co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of Gendo. He studied Science & Policy at Utrecht University and previously worked for IBM as a computer engineer and IT trainer. Since 2002, Arjen has been advising senior executives of F500 companies and several governments at Cabinet level on the opportunities that open standards and open source software offer in Europe. He is also a certified auditor and information security expert. Last year he wrote a handbook on online security and journalist protection that is used in 40 countries around the world to protect whistleblowers and journalists from government surveillance. The title of the book is “Information Security for Journalists, Protecting your story, your source and yourself online” and it is published by the Centre for Investigative Journalism.
