GfK: Smartphones boost consumer electronics sales

GfK's presentation on Saturday, April 25 at the IFA 2015 Global Press Conference in Malta was titled "Connecting the Dots" and included references to technological sectors such as consumer electronics, telecommunications, information technology, and home appliances.

GfK: Smartphones boost consumer electronics sales

Jürgen Boyny, Global Director Consumer Electronics GfK Retail and Technology, who made the presentation, referred to the important role of smartphones, which are driving developments in consumer electronics overall. In fact, their sales are expected to reach 1.4 billion devices in 2015.

The digital market in 2015 is expected to grow by 1.5% worldwide, with Europe, however, experiencing a slight decline (-2%), while growth is expected in other markets (North America, emerging regions of Asia, and the Middle East/Africa).

However, there is also growth in sales of large and small household appliances, while, of course, there is also significant growth in the wearables market, where calculations suggest that in 2015 there will be 72 million device sales and in 2016 the number will skyrocket to 114 million.

Boyny made references to lifestyle smartwatches and drones, which he described as the "next upcoming hype", while noting that Internet innovations do not only concern mobile Internet but also connectivity in your home, through Smart TVs and so on.

The conclusion of the presentation was that the market in all sectors continues to grow, as smartphones and the mobile Internet face new challenges and the Internet of Things begins to take its first steps.

GfK has renewed its appointment for the IFA 2015 exhibition in Berlin, which this year will take place from September 4 to 9.
