The Cybercrime Prosecution Directorate investigated a case of mass sending of mobile phone messages that urged recipients to contact a female person, who had allegedly found their number through a mutual acquaintance.

International numbers appeared as forwarding numbers, while the SMS urged recipients to contact specific phone numbers, which as it turned out were not premium rates or for advertising purposes.

Specifically, the content of the message was as follows: «I saw you at the café and I liked you a lot. Sakis/Thimis/Thanos gave me your number. I am the girl who was staring at you persistently. I’ll be happy to talk. 69..…….». The sender numbers appeared as a) +17142664594, b) +17142264594 and c) +19499031148, while the telephone numbers listed at the end of the message are: 1) 6982284235, 2) 6943544619, 3) 6948904475, 4) 6948926425, 5) 6943544569, 6) 6955741295, 7) 6948359222 and 8) 6947978267.

For the above, the competent prosecutorial authorities were informed and a preliminary examination was ordered, within which, for his involvement in the case, a Greek from Agios Dimitrios, Attica, was identified as the holder of the telephone connections.

In the context of specialized research by the Cybercrime Directorate it emerged that the phone numbers mentioned at the end of the SMS are not used for high charges or advertising purposes, while the exact purpose of sending the SMS is being further investigated, mainly in the field of personal data breaches.

The case file drawn up for the case will be submitted to the Athens Misdemeanor Courts Prosecutor's Office.
