Samsung it will donate 3,000 smartphones, worth approximately $1 million, to support the fight against Ebola. The devices will be donated to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) and used in the Humanitarian Connectivity Project, which provides humanitarian assistance to affected areas through mobile devices.
The smartphones, Galaxy S3 Neo models, will be given to 60 clinics treating the virus in the countries of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.
By installing the United Nations app , Smart Health Pro, medical staff can use smartphones to facilitate patient treatment and gather useful medical data. At the same time, patients themselves in isolation will be able to communicate with their families using the devices.
All smartphones will be destroyed once the virus outbreak subsides.
Samsung is also supporting a range of Ebola response efforts in Africa. The company has also announced an Ebola SMS service that is available in South Africa
