His presence is very useful as the minor hacker has access to forums and networks from which information is collected and appropriately evaluated.

The "Sunday Nation" unfolds the unprecedented case of the 17-year-old hacker who was "recruited" by the Cybercrime Prosecution Directorate.

This is a unique case in Greek history, as it is the first time that an "illegal" has crossed to the other side and "hunts" his former "like-minded people" on behalf of the Law.

It all started two years ago, when police were searching for the electronic traces of the perpetrator who had launched a sophisticated and complex cyberattack on a government website. Following and analyzing the digital footprints, they arrived outside the door of a house in the southern suburbs. The police were surprised to find that the perpetrator, the "fear and terror" of the Internet, was a 15-year-old boy who was "downloading" switches in large organizations from his teenage room.

The 15-year-old was arrested and charged with the cyberattack. He was given restrictive conditions, including a ban on leaving the country, mandatory reporting to his local police station, and a ban on using keyboards.

The case of the 17-year-old hacker was also mentioned by the Minister of Public Order and Citizen Protection Vasilis Kikilias (here with the head of the Cybercrime Prosecution, Brigadier General M. Sfakianakis.

However, a short while ago, the special investigator handling the case took an initiative that surprised everyone in a positive way. After consulting with Brigadier General Manolis Sfakianakis, she summoned the minor hacker and gave him the following option: instead of appearing every 1 and 15 minutes at his local police station, he should report to the Cybercrime Unit.

The outcome is known and for the last two months the hacker has been sharing his valuable knowledge with his "colleagues" on the 13th floor of the GADA. This is the first time that this specific beneficial provision has been used, which provides for the social reintegration of the arrested person through the offering of his services for the "common good".

Social work
Now, the hacker works non-profitably for the Greek Police and even shows particular zeal in fighting crimes in Cyberspace.

Information from "The Sunday Nation" reports that the minor had "become involved" with activist online groups and participated in attacks with them, which led to his arrest and "discovery" by M. Sfakianakis. "I was young and I was influenced. Now I like helping," the 17-year-old hacker is reported to have told his friends about his use by the Hellenic Police.

Officers of the Prosecution of Electronic Crime report that the little one is a model in the service and does a very good job. "Typical, cooperative and extremely useful", they report characteristically to "Ethnos tis Kyriakis". His specialty in the Prosecution is to find the "holes" of the system, the vulnerable points and then violate them to highlight the weaknesses. In the Hellenic Police, he mainly deals with Internet security, intrusions and attacks on computers and websites.

His presence is very useful for the experienced and highly capable officers of the Cybercrime Investigation Department, as the minor hacker has access to forums and networks from which information is collected and appropriately evaluated. There, reports are made on all the latest developments in the hacking field.

The 17-year-old is a high school student and a very good one, with excellent grades. He has a huge curiosity about the Internet and its applications, which is what instantly put him on the "bad path". He is constantly in front of a computer and "sleeps very little. He spends about 15 hours on his computer and researches the "secrets" of the Internet", say people from his close circle.

The status of cooperation between the Hellenic Police and the minor computer genius will remain the same until the court. Until then, the hacker is under the "supervision" of Brigadier General M. Sfakianakis. Shortly before the court decides on the fate of the minor, the head of the Electronic Crime Investigation Department will draw up a report on the young man's offer and submit it to the judicial officers. It is estimated that it will be accepted in favor of the 17-year-old and the way will be opened for his recruitment with a service provision block in the Hellenic Police. To do this, a special budget (KAE) must be approved for the financing of similar individuals who will work for the specialized service of the Hellenic Police.

Both won

"I understand that everyone has the right to make mistakes, especially young people. We are here to prevent them, but also when this mistake occurs, to understand the motives and dimensions of it by offering solutions. I consider the proposal made by Justice to a teenage hacker to be such an opportunity. The social work that this young man is offering today to the Hellenic Police and specifically to the Cybercrime Prosecution Directorate is important and certainly helps both sides," said the minister, who did not rule out the possibility of opening the way for hackers who were caught in the crosshairs of the Law to provide their services to the Hellenic Police.
