Based on a new law, the Hellenic Police can create “fake» profiles on Facebook in order to trap suspects for child pornography and more. From now on, the tactic of law‑enforcement authorities of creating “virtual persons» on social‑networking pages, which also surfaced in the case of the “satanist» of Glyfada, will not only have a detection character but will also demonstrate criminal activity. At the same time it is found that all critical services of the Hellenic Police have dedicated analysts who monitor and analyze Facebook postings in order to find links between suspects, suspects of criminal actions up to… gunfire mainly displayed by foreign actors.
Accordingly, according to a law that was passed a few days ago - based on the relevant European directive - the Cybercrime Division is provided with the ability to create «secured» fake profiles of minors -and in other circumstances- in order to «trap» pedophiles and perpetrators of other crimes.
Now any culpable nonsense or request to send photos and other things from the police‑creator of the fake Facebook profile means the arrest of the «conversationalist» on social networking pages. The Hellenic Police now validates and registers with a special certification the virtual persons it creates on the Internet and anyone who «gets trapped» will immediately be opposite the police with evidence such as mail, likes, photos and electronic dialogues.
At the same time, the new law allows the Hellenic Police (EL.AS.) to automatically arrest any pedophiles who are merely connected online to sites that transmit child rapes, punishing for the first time the simple «viewing» and not the distribution of pornographic material involving minors, as was the case until now. Moreover, the new legislation provides the Hellenic Police with the ability to immediately stop the operation of such electronic addresses.
The tracking of «satanist» – the experience
At the same time the method of locating the 22‑year‑old «satanist» of Glyfada who was making related posts on the Internet after the murder of the 41‑year‑old homeless woman shows that more and more often the Hellenic Police draw information from the entries. The fact that the number of registered users of social networking pages in Greece exceeds 4,000,000 people constitutes a significant «tool» in the hands of the Hellenic Police, the Cyber Crime Unit but also insurance companies that look for «staged accidents» through Facebook friends.
The kidnapping of a 22-year-old in Kastoria in 2011, the murder of a 30-year-old private employee in May 2010 with a perpetrator an Albanian abuser were uncovered through a series of searches and tricks by the Hellenic Police on Facebook.
After the commission of a crime whose motives are unknown, the Hellenic Police often examines the victim's «profile» on the Internet in order to see if there are entries on the «wall», some like on a photo or some reference in his timeline that could be linked to his murder.
The police create «schematics» of gangs by analyzing the common «friends» on the social media of the core suspect group, and also proceeding with related combinations. They have also searched social networking pages to find if there are entries -conversations, photo posts- of the suspects at times related to criminal acts. Thus they can check their whereabouts as well as their movements during critical periods. Additionally, in two cases the Hellenic Police dismantled gangs of Albanian criminals when they saw in their profiles photos holding guns, bundles of banknotes and loot from robberies…
