Rapid growth is expected for businesses that focus on creating applications for mobile phones, tablets, and smart TVs.
Of course, the increase in economic figures will be accompanied by the creation of thousands of new jobs.
Turning to the numbers of the research conducted by Cigaom on behalf of the European Commission, one finds that the "app economy" has the potential to create 3 million new jobs in the next 5 years.
More specifically, the Cigaom report states that in 2013, 1.8 million were employed. Of these, 800,000 were in the field of marketing and support, while those involved in creating applications amounted to 1 million. In 2018, application developers are expected to increase by 1.7 million.
While the positions that will be created in the support sector will skyrocket from 800 thousand to 2.1 million.
It is worth noting that of the jobs that will be created, 39% will concern jobs in small independent companies, 37% of the positions will concern large companies, while positions in companies that assign their staff to create applications (in-house developers) will increase by 24%.
However, the data so far shows that those working in the field of application creation are mostly men, while programmers' salaries amount to 50,000 euros per year.
The reason why total jobs are expected to increase by 166% is attributed to the increase in money expected to be spent by both consumers, advertisers and companies.
According to the research, in 2013, 6.1 billion euros were spent in the EU, representing 30% of global spending. In 2018, 18.7 billion euros are expected to be spent on applications in the EU. In short, an increase of 206 percentage points is expected in spending.
Regarding the financial figures of the "app economy", the research states, among other things, that total revenue for companies in the field amounted to 17.5 billion euros and this amount is expected to increase by 47.5 billion in 2018, reaching 63 billion euros.
