Like another popular app, Whisper, Secret is free and allows users to upload an image along with a few lines of text. Secret shows users anonymous “secret” comments from contacts who also use the app and, under certain conditions, posts from friends of those contacts. The idea, according to its creators, is to create an “anonymous community” that shares “secrets.” If one of the contacts “loves” a user’s “secret,” it is then sent to their own contacts, with the result that the “loving” effect results in the sharing of “secrets” across the network.
Although the user can see "secrets" of users beyond their initial contact group, they can only comment on what their "friends" and "friends of friends" have posted. Secret in no way reveals who posted or commented on anything, as it bypasses the use of pseudonyms by simply informing that a "secret" was posted by a "friend" or a "friend of a friend.".
According to its creators, Secret is a place where anyone can openly share their thoughts and feelings with friends. "Speak freely, share anything," it says, while emphasizing the lack of names and profiles.
