Every day we read and hear about the surveillance and data breach practices of technology companies, government agencies, and security services. So a new Android smartphone will soon put protection and control in the hands of its users..
On Wednesday, Silent Circle and Geeksphone announced the creation of a new Swiss product that will be the first surveillance-preventing device, the Blackphone.
The smartphone is powered by a Android operating system called PrivatOS. The Blackphone promises its users (whether they are consumers or businesses) to make and receive secure calls, securely exchange data and files, and video chat without compromising their privacy.
The smartphone is the brainchild of security and technology experts, including Phil Zimmermann, creator of PGP, Javier Aguera, co-founder of Geeksphon, Jon Callas, co-founder of PGP and director of Silent Circle, Rodrigo Silva Ramos, co-founder of Geeksphone, and Mike Janke, CEO of Silent Circle.
“I’ve spent my entire life building secure telephony products,” said Zimmermann. “The Blackphone gives users everything they need to protect their privacy and control their communications, along with all the other features that other smartphones have.”
The Blackphone will be unveiled at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, and pre-orders will begin in late February. However, as of today, there is no information available regarding its price.
Geeksphone is a Madrid-based company that develops and markets open source mobile solutions. Silent Circle, based in Washington, DC, is a global encrypted communications provider known for providing secure email services – Silent Mail.
