DuckDuckGo browser blocks ads on YouTube

DuckDuckGo has announced a major upgrade to its browser, introducing ad-blocking for most YouTube ads without the need to install additional extensions. The new feature is already available in the latest versions of the browser for Windows , macOS , and iOS , while Android users can manually enable it through the app's settings.

This addition further strengthens DuckDuckGo's character as a browser that prioritizes privacy and user experience, positioning it against competitors like Brave and Opera , which have long had built-in ad and tracker blocking tools

Fewer interruptions when watching videos

YouTube is the world's largest video hosting platform, serving billions of users every day. For those without a YouTube Premium, ads are a key part of the experience, funding both the operation of the service and the remuneration of content creators.

However, in recent years, many users have expressed their dissatisfaction with the ever-increasing frequency of advertisements. Advertisement interruptions before the start of a video, interruptions during playback, and non-skippable ads have become one of the biggest complaints of the community.

DuckDuckGo's new feature aims to address exactly this problem, offering a smoother viewing experience without constant interruptions.

How the new blocking system works

Contrary to what you might expect, the new feature is not based on Duck Player, DuckDuckGo's dedicated player for YouTube videos.

Duck Player continues to focus primarily on privacy, using YouTube's strictest settings available to limit tracking cookies and personalized advertising.

The new blocking system works differently. It is based on the well-known filter lists maintained by the uBlock Origin, one of the most popular ad blocking solutions in the world. At the same time, the DuckDuckGo development team has added its own compatibility rules, aiming to improve efficiency in the face of Google's constant changes to YouTube.

Can be used together with Duck Player

One of the interesting features of the new feature is that it can work alongside Duck Player, allowing users to benefit from both increased privacy and the blocking of most ads when visiting the regular YouTube website directly.

According to DuckDuckGo, the goal is to offer the classic platform experience without the interruptions of ads, while maintaining features such as viewing history, playlists, and saving video progress.

There are restrictions

The company points out that the new feature is still in an early stage of development and may not always work with complete reliability.

One of the main reasons is that Google frequently changes the way ads are served on YouTube. As a result, any blocking system may temporarily stop working until the relevant filtering rules are updated.

Ad blocking can also slightly increase the loading time before a video starts playing, but according to DuckDuckGo, once the initial buffering, the viewing experience remains just as smooth as on regular YouTube.

User input will play an important role

As the feature is still in its early stages of rollout, DuckDuckGo invites users to try it out and send feedback through the app's built-in reporting mechanism.

Reports are sent anonymously and will be used to identify compatibility issues, as well as to improve the effectiveness of blocking against new techniques implemented by YouTube.

This specific process is considered particularly important, as the platform's ad serving mechanisms are constantly changing and require continuous adjustment of filters.

Browser competition is getting fiercer

By adding a built-in ad blocker to YouTube, DuckDuckGo is attempting to strengthen its position in the privacy-focused browser market . Until now, solutions like Brave and Opera have offered similar features without the need to install third-party extensions, attracting users looking for a cleaner browsing experience.

The new feature is expected to be a major incentive for those looking to limit both ads and tracking of their online activity. At the same time, the development reignites the ongoing confrontation between platforms that base their revenue on advertising and browsers that seek to give users more control over their browsing experience.
