US: Hacker admits to violating Supreme Court

Another disturbing cybercrime incident highlights the security gaps and the new “ show-off culture ” that accompanies some digital attacks . A 24-year-old hacker from Tennessee has pleaded guilty to illegally accessing sensitive information systems United States federal , including the Supreme Court ’s electronic filing system , as well as platforms belonging to AmeriCorps and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Supreme Court Hacker

Who is the perpetrator and what exactly did he do?

According to federal authorities, Nicholas Moore of Springfield, Tennessee, gained unauthorized access to restricted systems using stolen login credentials. Between August and October 2023, Moore accessed the Supreme Court’s filing system at least 25 times, in some cases logging in multiple times in the same day.

The frequency of the connections, according to prosecutors, indicates that this was not random or test access, but rather systematic exploitation of compromised accounts, with the aim of extracting information and showcasing his "success".

Instagram as a showcase for cybercrime

Of particular interest is the way Moore chose to publicize the breaches. Through the Instagram account @ihackedthegovernment, he posted screenshots of the systems he breached, revealing names of victims and details from inside the filing .

The Ministry of Justice reported that in at least three cases the posts contained clear identifying information about the victims, which further burdened the defendant's position and highlighted the dimension of the public data leak.

AmeriCorps personal data leak

The hacker's activity wasn't limited to the Supreme Court. Using compromised MyAmeriCorps credentials, he repeatedly accessed a second victim's account, a total of seven times over the same period. He extracted personal information, including date of birth, home address, contact information, military service information, and the last four digits of a social security number.

This data, extremely sensitive in terms of privacy and risk of identity theft, was also published on Instagram, amplifying the impact of the breach.

Access to veterans' medical records

Even more serious is the breach of the My HealtheVet . The hacker used stolen Marine Corps veteran credentials to gain access to personal health between September and October 2023. The system is part of the largest integrated healthcare network in the US, serving millions of veterans.

Prosecutors stressed that the breach allowed access to information such as prescription drugs and medical data, which was then made public.

Legal consequences for the hacker and broader conclusions

Moore pleaded guilty to computer fraud, a misdemeanor that carries a sentence of up to one year in prison and a fine of up to $100,000. Although the sentence is considered relatively lenient, the case highlights the need for enhanced cybersecurity, as well as the increasing tendency of perpetrators to seek exposure on social media.

In an era where data is a valuable asset, this case serves as a reminder that protecting digital systems is not just a technical issue, but also a social one, with real consequences for citizens.
