A major data breach has hit the Richmond Behavioral Health Authority (RBHA), a major mental health service provider in Virginia. The attackers allegedly stole personal and sensitive data from the agency’s systems.

On September 29, the provider was hit by a ransomware attack that resulted in the encryption of parts of its network. RBHA says it detected the incident on September 30 and immediately blocked the attackers from its network.

The threat actor likely gained access to personal information, such as names, social security numbers, passport numbers, as well as financial and health information.
"There is no clear evidence that your personal information was stolen at this time. However, because an unknown actor has gained access to our network, we are providing this notice as a precaution," RBHA said in a notice on its website.
While RBHA did not name the ransomware group responsible for the attack, the Qilin claimed responsibility in mid-October when it added the healthcare organization to the leak website.
Qilin has since published 192 gigabytes of data (over 393,000 files in total) allegedly stolen from RBHA.

Richmond Behavioral Health Authority – Data Breach
RBHA is facing serious challenges due to this breach. The impact of the attack is widespread, with approximately 113,000 people affected, with their personal data at risk. This breach highlights the importance of security in the healthcare sector, as organizations that handle sensitive information are often targets of malicious attacks.

The Richmond Behavioral Health Authority has already begun the process of notifying those affected by the breach, is working with authorities to identify and neutralize those responsible, and is taking steps to strengthen the security of its systems to prevent future attacks.
Security experts warn that ransomware attacks are on the rise, with attackers targeting organizations that handle sensitive data, such as those in the healthcare sector.

This breach has also raised concerns among RBHA users, who are concerned about the security of their personal data. Experts recommend that users be extra careful with the information they share and monitor their financial transactions for any suspicious activity. In addition, it is recommended to use strong passwords and enable two-factor authentication to protect their accounts.
