PIH Health was attacked by ransomware, forcing a complete shutdown of its network and leaving millions of people in the dark about access to healthcare services.

Families were informed that they could either wait until systems were restored or seek treatment at another hospital, as the incident occurred over the weekend.

According to officials, on Sunday their network was hit by a “criminal attack” that “compromised its operation.” As a result, network services were completely disabled at their hospital units in Downey, Whittier and downtown Los Angeles.
Although emergency centers and urgent care units remained open, doctors and patients found themselves without access to medical records, laboratory systems, pharmaceutical orders, and radiology services. In addition, both phone lines and internet access were down.

“Taking care of the healthcare needs of our communities remains our top priority,” PIH Health said in a statement. “We continue to provide services during the shutdown across all of our facilities, including our three hospitals, physician offices, home care, palliative care, outpatient imaging and laboratories.”

Authorities noted that they have already informed local authorities about the incident, while the FBI is actively participating in the ongoing investigation.
