HMND 01 Alpha Bipedal: The robot that learned to walk in 48 hours

The next generation of humanoid robots is arriving in… 48 hours. British company Humanoid has unveiled the HMND 01 Alpha Bipedal, a robot designed for industrial, domestic and utility tasks, aiming to address labor shortages, physically demanding jobs and the ever-increasing burden of often unpaid home care.

A humanoid who walked in two days

Where humans take about a year to learn to stand and walk, Alpha took just 48 hours after assembly to achieve stable bipedal locomotion. This is a feat that, in robotics, usually takes weeks or even months, making the achievement a milestone for the startup.

Even more impressive is the fact that from the first design line to the fully functional prototype it took just five months—while the average development time for similar humanoids ranges from 18 to 24 months.

Five months of development, 19 months of learning – all in simulation

Humanoid leveraged Isaac Sim and Isaac Lab , simulation platforms that enable virtual training with reinforcement learning. In this environment, the team compressed the equivalent of 19 months of traditional motion training into just two days.

In other words, when Alpha first stood on its feet, it had already gained millions of seconds of “experience” through virtual scenarios of balance, walking, recovery after a push, and movement on different terrains.

Technical characteristics: Height, strength and agility similar to that of a human

With a height of 1.79 meters and the ability to carry objects weighing up to 15 kilograms, Alpha aims to be a real support tool in multiple environments.

Its articulated hands can be replaced depending on use: regular five-fingered hands for detailed work and simple handles for industrial handling.

Depth cameras , vision systems , and built-in microphones allow the robot to have a clear perception of the environment, recognize objects, and interact with people.

Tasks that Alpha can perform today

The HMND 01 Alpha Bipedal isn't limited to basic movements. The Humanoid reports impressive skills:

  • walks straight or in curved paths
  • performs squats
  • takes sideways steps
  • runs
  • jumps small obstacles
  • interacts with objects and people
  • collaborates with other robots
  • regains balance when pushed

The latter capability is a crucial element for movement in real spaces, where unpredictable collisions and obstacles are the norm.

Business utility: From factories to home

Humanoid founder and CEO Artem Sokolovexplains that Alpha was not designed to be a spectacular robotics demonstration, but to address real-world problems.

In the industrial sector, labor shortages are as high as 27% in some markets, creating large production gaps. There, Alpha can take on repetitive or heavy-duty tasks, reducing the burden on workers.

In the home environment, the robot could provide valuable support to the elderly or people with mobility difficulties, helping with daily tasks, transporting objects or simple coordination functions.

Modular design: The robot that… upgrades like a smartphone

Humanoid emphasizes that Alpha has been built with a modular architecture philosophy. This means that future upgrades can be as simple as:

  • changing an arm,
  • integration of new sensors,
  • or even changing "clothes", i.e. external panels, for different usage environments.

This level of flexibility paves the way for rapid evolution of the robot's capabilities without the need for complete replacement.

A future where robots will be everyday partners

The HMND 01 Alpha Bipedal is not just another technological innovation. It is a sample of the speed with which robotics is now evolving, thanks to the combined power of simulations and reinforcement learning.

As Humanoid moves into the next stages of development, Alpha could be the first step towards a world where humanoid robots are not science fiction, but everyday helpers at work and at home.
