Meta: Removes political ads from platforms in the EU

Meta Platforms , the parent company of Facebook , Instagram and Threads , has announced that it is suspending all political and election advertising in the European Union , effective from the beginning of October. The decision comes in response to new EU regulations on transparency in targeted political advertising . These regulations are set to come into effect on October 10, 2025 .

In a post on its official blog, the company states that compliance with the new regulatory framework creates “significant operational challenges” and adds that the prevailing legal uncertainty makes it unrealistic to implement the requirements in the required timeframe.

"The rules introduce additional obligations to our processes and systems that create a level of complexity and legal uncertainty for advertisers and platforms operating in the EU," Meta said.

New European rules, big technological reactions

The new EU regulations on the Transparency and Targeting of Political Advertising require digital platforms to clearly disclose who is paying for each political ad, to whom it is addressed , and to which campaign, referendum or parliamentary process it is linked . In addition, a public database will be created where all political advertising data will be stored.

Targeted display of such ads is only allowed under limited and strictly defined conditions, while in cases of violation, penalties can reach up to 6% of a company's global revenue — an amount that for giants like Meta or Google translates into billions of dollars.

Meta: Stop paid political campaigns — not political content

Meta clarified that the ban only applies to paid advertising. Users, politicians, and organizations will be able to continue discussing political issues and posting relevant content. However, they will not be able to boost their posts with advertising.

The decision puts Meta out of the political “game”, at least when it comes to the commercial dimension of election campaigns within the EU. This means that parties, candidates and interest groups will need to seek other methods of digital promotion or turn to platforms that may remain active — although the previous blocking of political ads by Google also indicates a broader trend of Big Tech’s withdrawal from the political field in Europe.

A regulatory test for the future of elections

Meta’s decision is a clear warning to EU regulators: when rules are changed without technical clarity and reasonable scope for implementation, platforms may simply exit the market. While the rules aim to reduce manipulation, disinformation and foreign interference, several experts express concerns that the strictness of the framework could be counterproductive — especially for smaller political formations that rely on low-budget digital campaigns.

At the same time, the question remains whether platforms can guarantee the implementation of such rules with technical reliability, without exceeding their capabilities or violating privacy principles.

Geopolitical dimension and legal conflict with the US

The new European framework is part of a broader strategy by Brussels to counter foreign influence in elections, strengthening digital sovereignty and protecting citizens. However, a confrontation with the US is imminent: the Trump administration (and analysts around it) has characterized the European regulations as interventionist and anti-business, considering them harmful to internet freedom.

In any case, Meta's decision confirms that the relationship between technology and politics is becoming increasingly sensitive, complex, and geopolitically charged.
