YouTube is making some changes to its algorithm to limit videos that promote idealized beauty standards and those that show aggressive actions (without necessarily violence) so that teens to such content. As YouTube itself explained in a new blog post, this content may be theoretically harmless, but could "be problematic for some teens if they watch it repeatedly."

The restrictions aim to prevent younger users from being systematically exposed to such videos, without at the same time completely removing this content, since much of it complies with YouTube's content guidelines.

"Teens are more likely to form negative beliefs about themselves when they see repeated messages about ideal role models," YouTube said.
The new restrictions will apply to content that compares or idealizes certain physical characteristics, deals with weight and fitness, or displays “social aggression,” such as bullying and non-physical fights. In addition, there will be restrictions on YouTube videos with tutorials makeup on changing the appearance of the nose or eye shape, and on fitness videos that promote a muscular or slim physique.

“The higher frequency of content that idealizes unhealthy role models or behaviors can convey potentially problematic messages — and these messages can affect how some teens see themselves,” said Allison Briscoe-Smith, a researcher on YouTube’s Youth and Families Advisory Board. “Protective measures can help teens maintain healthy patterns as they naturally compare themselves to others and decide how they want to appear to the world.”

YouTube's decision to restrict videos that promote non-violent aggression and idealized appearances is a step toward creating a more positive and inclusive platform for teens. The move reflects growing concern about the impact of social media on young users, particularly when it comes to body image and mental health.

By limiting the promotion of such content, YouTube recognizes its responsibility as a major online platform that influences young minds. The algorithm changes will help filter out potentially harmful content and make it less likely for teens to encounter it while browsing the site.
