Google announced Thursday that it is opening up a creative AI Search Experience for teens. The company is also offering a new feature for users to add content to their searches, along with an update that improves the training of the AI model to more accurately detect false or offensive queries.

The AI-powered search experience, also known as SGE (Search Generative Experience), brings a new conversational feature to Google search. You can ask Google questions in a conversational way, about any topic.

Starting this week, teens ages 13-17 with a Google Account in the United States will be able to sign up for Search Labs. Through the Google app or Chrome desktop, they will have access to an artificial intelligence search experience.

“Genetic AI can help young people ask questions that a search engine typically can’t answer, and follow up with more questions that help them dig deeper,” said Hema Budaraju, Senior Director of Product Management at Google. “As we introduce this new technology to teens, we’re striking the right balance between creating opportunities for them to take advantage of all it has to offer, while also prioritizing safety and meeting their developmental needs. Drawing on research and expertise in teen development, we’ve ensured they have a great experience while they search.”

Budaraju points out that Google has developed safeguards to prevent inappropriate or harmful content from appearing. For example, the company has put in place stricter safeguards to deal with cases involving illegal or underage substances or bullying.

Google is seeing an increase in SGE usage among teens, indicating that the experience is more popular with younger users. According to Google, the highest satisfaction scores are seen in the 18-24 age group, as the company believes these users are more willing to ask questions.

In addition to introducing AI to search for teens, Google is offering a new feature to give users more context about the content they’re seeing. Specifically, the company is adding a “About this result” notification, which is now available in the AI-powered search experience. According to Google, the notifications will provide users with context about how the technology generated the answer, offering a better understanding of how the technology works.

Google plans to soon add an “About this result” feature to links included in SGE answers. This will allow users to learn more about the websites that back up the information in AI-powered insights.

The company says it has been focused on implementing targeted improvements to the AI search experience. One of those improvements is that when a query contains a false or misleading premise, it can lead to an AI-based answer that confirms that false or misleading claim. Google notes that this can happen even if the web pages themselves reference reliable information.

To address this situation, Google is releasing an update that improves the training of its AI model, allowing it to better detect types of false or offensive bias and provide higher-quality, accurate answers. In addition, the company is developing solutions to use large language models to critically evaluate its initial answers on sensitive topics and assign them, based on the principles of quality and safety.

Google has been upgrading its search experience for months with the help of artificial intelligence. It's boosting support for videos and images, providing local information and travel suggestions, and introducing new tools for summaries and definitions. It's also experimenting with ads that appear alongside AI-generated answers.
