The popular gaming platform for children, Roblox, has often been at the center of discussions due to the dangers it poses, and especially due to pedophiles who exploit the platform to trap young players.
A while back, he had a crush on DoctorRofatnik, aka “Doc,” who was the creator of Sonic Eclipse Online. Anyone can make a game in the Roblox digital sandbox, and this bootleg version of the hit Sega franchise was a big hit with kids.
As of September 2020, an estimated 36 million people, most of whom were under 13, were on Roblox every day, making it the most popular platform for kids. Sonic Eclipse was a favorite. DoctorRofatnik claimed to be one of the highest-paid developers on Roblox and bragged about it on his community on the Discord. There, thousands of fans who played Sonic Eclipse knew him as Jadon Shedletsky, 28, “a game developer, visionary, and a bit of a braggart,” as he wrote in his bio. No one knew what Doc really looked like, but he said he was a popular kid, with blond hair and blue eyes. He also said he drove fancy cars with a “hot Spanish girlfriend.”
Doc's humor made him more interesting to many kids. He had posted a rape joke, with one fan responding, "10/10." He had called the young girls who helped him develop Sonic Eclipse "sex slaves." Despite all that, he was very popular. Some also rushed to his defense, in September 2020, when a Sonic Eclipse player posted screenshots of a private conversation Doc had with a girl:
“You're 12, I expect you to be a little slow, but I'll soon corrupt you beyond your wildest dreams“.
“Words can't explain what I want to do with you“.
“You're the reason I'm going to end up behind bars 😂.“

The person who posted the screenshots was part of a group of gamers who were fed up with Doc’s homophobic, racist, and generally extreme posts on Discord and had begun searching for the person behind the persona. When Roblox Corp. learned of the messages , it shut down Doc’s account. But by then, he had transferred ownership of Sonic Eclipse to another gamer , a friend who continued on his behalf. Doc boasted that the resulting controversy tripled his earnings. By the spring of 2022, however, he had disappeared from the internet.
Players assumed he had committed suicide. Then, a few months later, a player posted a notification on Discord: "Doc has finally been caught."
Roblox: A popular gaming platform for children
Roblox was launched in the early 2000s. The platform attracted thousands and then millions of children.
Roblox now has 78 million daily active users and is one of the favorite gaming and social media platforms for the younger generation. That's why Roblox says it takes steps to protect children, including censoring content from potential pedophiles. The service claims to process more than 50,000 chats every second through its moderation protocols, which include a combination of artificial intelligence technology and human resources. The company says it scans all user content, including audio and text. Roblox has about 3,000 moderators.
Unlike other social networking apps, which ban children under 13 or provide them with special versions for minors, Roblox has no such restrictions because it was built for children. More than 40% of its users are preteens. However, this is a very dangerous age.
Since 2018, police in the United States have arrested at least a dozen people accused of kidnapping or abusing children they met and lured through Roblox. Some were already on sex offender registries or had previous convictions for abuse . They included a sheriff’s deputy, a teacher and a nurse. In the past 13 months alone, there have been seven arrests, including a man in Florida who tried to kidnap a teenager he was playing with on Roblox, a man accused of kidnapping an 11-year-old girl from New Jersey and a third man from California who allegedly abused a child he also met on Roblox. The pedophiles also tried to entice children to send photos or develop relationships with them, transferring the communications to other online platforms, until they arranged to meet.

Roblox's chief security officer, Matt Kaufman, calls safety and civility "fundamentals" for the company. He notes that systems scan all chat and other digital content, looking for inappropriate words and preventing players from sending photos.
He rejects the idea that Roblox has a systemic problem, and says that this problem is global. “Tens of millions of people of all ages have a safe and positive experience on Roblox every day,” he says.

But several people who have worked for Kaufman say Roblox is struggling to combat pedophiles. In interviews with more than 20 current and former employees, Businessweek repeatedly heard that while child safety is the company’s watchword, fully policing the platform is difficult. One moderator says her team receives hundreds of child safety reports every day that it can’t handle . Policing will become even more difficult as the company tries to reach co-founder and CEO David Baszucki’s goal of 1 billion daily users.
Eight current and former trust and safety workers say that Roblox’s user growth is taking priority over child safety. More staff are needed to manage the situation, but they’re not there. Others say that some safety features that could help kids have been dropped or turned off by default. And while the company says it’s increasingly relying on artificial intelligence, some employees say the technology isn’t yet able to detect subtle signs of child abuse by pedophiles.
A Roblox spokesperson disputes the claims of limited staff and resources. The spokesperson says that members of the security team are constantly sharing ideas for new tools, but the company needs time to review them. “To imply that the lack of immediate integration of specific ideas, tools, or features is a reflection of indifference or lack of prioritization is simply wrong,” the spokesperson says. “The long-term growth and longevity of Roblox depends on our ability to provide a safe experience for our users.”
Most of the security professionals interviewed by Businessweek say it’s harder to track down pedophiles on Roblox than on other online platforms because each user is an anonymous collection of pixels. No real names, email , or phone numbers are asked for when signing up, which protects the privacy of both children and pedophiles.
Simon and Doc
Before Doc was wanted by the FBI, he was being hunted by a group of gamers who grew up playing Roblox. They mocked the platform for having overly strict chat filters, which sometimes censored innocuous words but missed acronyms like “erp” (for “erotic role-playing”), and for failing to detect avatars with absurdly large genitals or simulated sex. By 2020, many distrusted Roblox and were conducting their own checks. The leader of that group was Ben Simon, now 27, who comments, “Roblox spends so much time, effort, and money convincing parents that their platform is safer than it actually is.” Simon is a controversial figure. He has mocked Roblox employees and insulted Baszucki, who banned him from X. Roblox banned him when he was 17. He created new accounts, expanding his YouTube subscriber base to 1.2 million, while Roblox has banned him from the platform at least 100 times. His videos have titles like “Uncovering Roblox’s Nastiest Community” and “Roblox’s Worst Moderation Problem.”
Some Roblox employees say they respect Simon's efforts, while others accuse him of caring more about clicks than kids.
In September 2020, Simon began receiving messages from players trying to get Doc fired. They sent him screenshots of Doc's messages with young girls, including some describing fantasies about kidnapping and raping a 12-year-old. After Simon reposted the messages on Twitter, many users flooded Doc's accounts, calling him a pedophile. Doc responded with a YouTube video defending himself. Off-screen and with his voice distorted, he admitted that the messages were real, but said they were just jokes.
Simon made a video of Doc's claims and admission and sent it to a Roblox employee. He asked the company to shut down the DoctorRofatnik account and Sonic Eclipse itself. Several other users say they also notified Roblox about Doc's account.
Four days after Simon reported the game, Roblox shut down Doc’s account and reported it to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. As previously reported, Doc had already transferred ownership of the game to a friend and created a new account. Roblox says it continued to search for and ban any alternative accounts, but left Sonic Eclipse up and running because the game did not pose a safety concern.

Simon sent a message to Roblox protesting: “Roblox is all about parents trusting the company to keep their kids safe, and that’s not going to happen if this is the answer to pedophiles,” he wrote. He tried to report Doc to the police, but all he had was an online alias. The police couldn’t do anything because they didn’t have enough evidence.
Roblox finally responded to Simon in late 2021, filing a lawsuit against him. He claimed he was the leader of a “cult-like cybermob” that was damaging the company’s reputation. He also said he had accounts with names like “cockassassin,” attempted to upload photos of Adolf Hitler, and used homophobic slurs in Roblox games.
With Simon on the sidelines, a 22-year-old Japanese gamer decided to take action, writing to the vice president of product development at Sega Sammy Holdings Inc. , the company that owns the trademarks related to Sonic the Hedgehog. She told him that the popular game was being used by a pedophile on Roblox. Sega then filed a copyright infringement notice with Roblox, and the game was shut down
Later, when a 15-year-old girl from Indiana disappeared , the FBI was finally able to track down Doc (whose real name is Arnold Castillo) and arrest him.
Many dangers for children
“Who plays Roblox?” Kirra Pendergast asks 75 students at a primary school in Lennox Head, Australia. About 60 children raise their hands.
"Who has been asked to be someone's friend on Roblox?" A dozen hands go up and there are lots of whispers.
“Who was offered free Robux for doing something inappropriate in the game?” Two hands slowly rise.
The session, which was recorded on video, was led by Pendergast, CEO of Safe on Social Media Pty Ltd., which advises schools and businesses on online safety.
“I started asking more specific things, like, ‘Who gets free Robux for stripping down their avatar?’ and a lot of kids raised their hands, laughing,” Pendergast says in an interview. Hundreds of kids have said since the pandemic that they were asked to move communication from Roblox to Snapchat or Discord or send nude photos in exchange for Robux.
“Parents let kids play Roblox thinking it’s a cute game, without any idea what’s really going on,” Pendergast says. “If I could delete one app right now, it would be Roblox.”
Roblox's open chat feature is a controversial topic among child safety experts. On Roblox, an 8-year-old can, by default, post anything they want in a chat that anyone can see. Parents need to enable safety features, such as limiting the types of people their kids can talk to or what games they can play. If parents don't, kids can talk to anyone.
«"If a pedophile wants to target younger children and talk to them to build a relationship of trust and initiate abuse, Roblox is an easy way to do that," says Ron Kerbs, CEO and founder of online child safety company Kidas. "Instead of going to the playground, you go to Roblox."».
Roblox is available for free on a wide range of devices. It takes less than a minute for kids to create an account and join a game, regardless of age. That's why it's so dangerous.
Roblox says the company has zero tolerance for pedophilia. However, the word “grooming” did not appear in its 2022 oversight guide, a copy of which was seen by Businessweek. And the company did not have automated systems to proactively look for such behavior, beyond basic text filters (until that year). Several employees also say that Roblox’s senior leaders have not looked into how the virtual currency by pedophiles, even though employees have raised the issue with managers. As it turns out, the problems are many, and the platform’s popularity doesn’t help control everything that happens.
There have been many reported incidents of child abduction and abuse on Roblox, and more and more substantial safety measures are needed to protect minors. Gaming platforms, especially those aimed at children, should prioritize safety over profits.

Given the risks and inadequate protection, parents should also be vigilant and monitor their child's online activities. Parents should have open and honest discussions with children about the potential dangers of online gaming and teach them how to spot and report inappropriate behavior.
Parents can also use the controls offered by platforms to limit interactions with strangers and only allow gaming in a safe and controlled environment.
The future of online gaming security
The rise in popularity of online games has created the need for more effective security measures. Game developers should work to improve the security features of platforms and collaborate with organizations dedicated to protecting children from pedophiles.
