Spanish authorities have arrested three people for using DDoSia, a platform that helps carry out distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks against governments and organizations in NATO countries.

The arrests were made at the suspects' homes in Seville, Huelva and Manacor. Police also seized computers and related equipment and documents that aid in the investigation.
However, the arrests do not appear to have deterred the pro-Russian hacktivist group that runs the platform, after new DDoS attacks against targets in the EU were detected on Monday morning.
DDoSia: DDoS attacks
A statement from the Spanish Ministry of the Interior states that the three detainees participated in the DDoSia project, which was developed and operated by NoName057.

“The peculiarity of the attacks carried out by NoName057 is that they are carried out using software developed by the group itself, software called “DDoSia”, which is used voluntarily by people who support the aims of this hacktivist,” says the Spanish Interior Minister.
DDoSia was launched in August 2022 as a new platform that uses volunteers' bandwidth to perform attacks against organizations supporting Ukraine.
The platform was used for several DDoS attacks against government organizations in Poland and Switzerland, causing service disruptions.
In June 2023, cybersecurity firm Sekoia reported that the DDoSia platform had achieved 2,400% growth, counting over 13,000 users on its Telegram channel. The firm's analysis of 486 DDoSia attacks between May 8 and June 26, 2023, showed that the platform had targeted organizations in more than 24 countries (most notably Lithuania, Ukraine, Poland, and Italy).

Spanish researchers said they are working to identify other members of the platform .

Although DDoS attacks are not as big a threat as those that distribute malware, they can cause a lot of problems.

A DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack is a form of cyberattack that aims to disrupt the services of a system or website, making it inaccessible to users. In essence, this attack causes an overload of the system's resources , making it unable to respond to user requests. Attackers in a DDoS attack typically use a network, known as a botnet, consisting of many computers. The attacker uses these computers to send a large volume of requests to the system they wish to “hit”.
