The bill seeks to strengthen defences and protect more digital services and supply chains, building on the NIS Regulations 2018. It will introduce mandatory reporting of ransomware attacks and give new powers to regulators. The government recognises the growing threat from cyberspace, citing recent high-profile cyberattacks and warnings from the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre.

The bill will upgrade the outdated regulatory framework for protecting supply chains, which is crucial to addressing the threat from hackers, according to Martin Greenfield, CEO of Quod Orbis. This will help the government deliver on its promise of economic growth. Businesses need proactive cybersecurity strategies to achieve sustainable growth. The announcements in the King’s Speech promote a safer digital economy.
