Unpleasant odors in your car's A/C? See how to fix it

For drivers, having an air conditioning system in their vehicle that doesn't produce cool air during the spring and summer months is unpleasant. Even more frustrating is turning on the A/C and discovering that it's emitting an unpleasant odor, which of course could indicate problems.

What causes the unpleasant smell of A/C?

Before you try to get rid of the smell coming from your car's A/C unit, it's worth understanding why it's happening, as different scents indicate different issues.

The appearance of musty and damp odors is common, especially in areas with high humidity. This is usually due to moisture accumulating in the A/C evaporator over time, leading to the growth of bacteria. Dust buildup can also clog the evaporator and cause mold. Similarly, a vinegar-like odor can also indicate the presence of mold, but other potential problems include leaks from the battery , coolant leaks, or high ozone emissions.

How to fix your car's A/C when it smells bad yourself

You will first need to purchase a new cabin filter for your car, if it already has one. You will also need a can of disinfectant spray specifically designed for car air conditioning systems, which you can find at most auto parts stores. With all the necessary materials in hand, follow these steps:

  • Start your engine and open the windows to avoid inhaling substances.
  • Turn off the A/C, set the temperature to the lowest possible level, and turn on the ventilation mode.
  • Turn on the fan for a few minutes to help dry out the moisture.
  • Leave the engine running, select the Heat mode , and increase the fan speed to maximum for a few minutes
  • Remove your car's cabin filter, if applicable, possibly with the help of a mechanic. The process will be difficult to complete successfully without removing it.
  • Turn on the fan to the highest setting along with the A/C and observe for any odors.
  • Locate the air intakes by placing a sheet of paper or your hands over the corresponding grilles. You will likely find them either at the base of the windshield on the outside or under the hood.

  • Apply the disinfectant to the air intakes, keeping it active for about 30 seconds, while keeping the A/C running.
