ChatGPT available on Apple CarPlay with voice control

ChatGPT is now available on Apple CarPlay via voice commands , thanks to the iOS 26.4 update , which paved the way for the use of AI chatbots in the car dashboard. The new feature allows drivers to interact with the OpenAI  chatbot without distracting them from driving, marking a new era in the integration of artificial intelligence in vehicles.

The integration of ChatGPT into CarPlay is part of Apple’s broader strategy to integrate artificial intelligence into its ecosystem. iOS 26.4 adds support for “voice-based conversational apps” to CarPlay, enabling the use of AI chatbots exclusively via voice, a development that arose from the growing demand from users for advanced AI features in their cars.

When using ChatGPT via CarPlay, the app does not display text or images, in strict compliance with Apple’s safety guidelines. Instead, all conversations are conducted exclusively through voice commands. The guidelines require apps not to display visual content that could distract the driver. This approach aligns with NHTSA showing that voice interfaces reduce distraction by 70% compared to touchscreens. The app features on-screen buttons to mute and end the conversation, and users can view a list of their recent conversations, maintaining a history of their interactions for future reference.

Advantages and limitations of ChatGPT on CarPlay

The new feature offers significant advantages, especially in the ability to conduct complex conversations. ChatGPT can answer complex questions, provide detailed explanations of technical issues or give travel advice, without drivers having to look at the screen. With 400 million weekly active users by the end of 2025, ChatGPT has proven its reliability in various usage scenarios. The use of voice mode has also increased significantly, showing the potential of voice interaction with AI.

However, there are some limitations that users should be aware of. Drivers cannot use a wake word to activate ChatGPT via CarPlay, but must tap the app to open it, which can be a bit of a hassle while driving. Additionally, the lack of visual feedback can limit some uses that would benefit from graphics, charts, or text, such as displaying maps or complex data. However, these limitations are intentional and aimed at maintaining safety while driving.

The integration comes at a time of intense competition in the in-car infotainment space, where artificial intelligence is becoming a key differentiator. Google Android Auto has already added integration Gemini AI, allowing voice queries for navigation, weather and other information directly from the dashboard, pushing Apple to respond with similar features. CarPlay has a significant market share in premium vehicles and is integrated into many models from major automakers.

According to The Verge, the new feature is available for users who have iOS 26.4 or later and the latest version of the ChatGPT.

This development is expected to accelerate the integration of AI in cars, putting pressure on traditional infotainment companies and opening up new possibilities for the automotive industry. By 2030 , 90% of vehicles could feature conversational AI , according to Gartner , with CarPlay / ChatGPT combinations driving the development of subscription services and turning cars into “mobile AI companions.”
