The Texas Chain Saw Massacre Review

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is a new asymmetric multiplayer horror game from Sumo Digital and Friday the 13thGun Interactive, based on the original 1974 horror film. The game plays like a more polished and cinematic version of Dead by Daylight, featuring 3v4 gameplay where Leatherface and two of his twisted family members hunt down four victims. The game aims to recreate the gritty horror of the film and live up to its legacy as one of the most culturally significant horror films ever made. It is part of a growing trend of asymmetric multiplayer horror games that have become popular in recent years.

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre features three maps upon release: the family house, the gas station, and the slaughterhouse. All three maps start in dark underground crypts that lead to one of the three structures. The family house is the best map, with stunning detail and easy navigation. The slaughterhouse can cause confusion in navigation for both killers and victims. As victims, players must find tools to unlock exits, while avoiding killers and possibly craft a knife to stab the grandpa. They can also solve puzzles to open additional exits or meet other requirements to escape. The primary goal of the killers is to prevent victims from escaping, but they can also collect blood from buckets around the map to give to the grandpa.

In the game, the grandfather is one of the most chilling characters. He wakes up in every match, leading to a jump scare where he flashes on the screen. After waking up, he uses echolocation to reveal the victims' positions. Feeding him blood enhances his abilities, making it harder for the victims to stay hidden. Playing as a victim is fun with the right group of friends, creating tension and unforgettable moments. Each victim has a special ability, such as Connie Focused's ability which allows her to open locks faster and more quietly. Ana has greater endurance, Leland can knock down the killers, Sonny can detect sound and Julie can hide her presence for a limited time. Connie Focused's ability is the best ability in the game.

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre

Texas Chain Saw Massacre can be fun when you play as the victims, but it gets tiresome when you play as the killers. It gets boring after a while, as the maps become memorized and the horror factor wears off. It ends up being a typical asymmetrical multiplayer game, with the only reason to keep playing is to level up your characters and experiment with different builds. The game has no offline options and no playable tutorials, so if the population drops, it will be unplayable. However, this is an Xbox Game Pass day one game, which should ensure a healthy player base at launch. At launch, it's one of the prettiest, most carefully crafted games of its kind on the market, capturing the eerie moods of the 1974 horror film superbly. Playing as victims with friends is fun, but playing as killers isn't so much.

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is out now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
