Mortal Kombat 1 is set to release next month and is currently one of the most anticipated titles for fall 2023. The title is set to usher in a new era for the legendary fighting franchise, while continuing the narrative of Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath and rebooting the series for a fresh start.

In a series of pre-release reveal trailers, developer NetherRealm Studios has done a great job of bringing back fan-favorite characters in new and exciting ways. While much of the hype surrounding Mortal Kombat 1 is directly tied to these trailers, the title's initial features, such as major gameplay improvements, the Kameo system, and a brand new mode, prove that it offers fans much more than just a fresh start in the timeline.
The story of Mortal Kombat 1 begins shortly after Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath, where the God of Fire Liu Kang creates a new timeline, in which peace and prosperity seem to reign unbroken. This peace seems to crumble as Shang Tsung, and possibly an even greater villain, disrupts the timeline's inhabitants, leading to the eponymous Mortal Kombat. Fan-favorite characters will take on new roles and identities in the game, offering old fans something fresh and new fans a perfect starting point. In addition, the title offers a new take on the legendary fighting series' core combat, allowing the summoning of partner characters for unique attacks and combo-extenders.
Mortal Kombat 1 offers fans a new narrative and a new Kameo Fighter mechanic. Kameo Fighters are Kombants who can be called upon to assist the player's main fighter, using their unique abilities to subvert the player's style and approach. A well-synchronized Kameo Fighter can expand an otherwise limited combo, complementing the player's main fighter's weaknesses.

In addition to the reboot of the timeline and story mode, a recent leak has revealed a brand new single-player mode coming to Mortal Kombat 1 called Invasions. In this mode, players travel through the various Mortal Kombat realms, fending off invasions across multiple seasons. The mode's roster will be limited to specific fighters each season. Invasions offers an alternative to traditional Mortal Kombat modes, taking a break from both the single-player story mode and the classic online multiplayer offerings of previous titles.
Mortal Kombat 1 is the latest fighting game to revamp its narrative universe, core gameplay, and features for a new era. The fighting game genre has evolved significantly since the Covid pandemic in 2020, with games like Street Fighter 6 launching with improved modes and gameplay features, fresh and diverse characters, a modernized story mode, and an online hub.
