With a new update, WhatsApp is looking to make spam calls less annoying and allow users to choose their best privacy settings, the company announced. The first feature, called “Silence Unknown Callers,” does just that — the calls won’t ring on your phone, but they’ll show up in your call log in case the call is important but you need to answer. For most users, this should offer a decent mix of convenience and privacy.

And speaking of privacy, WhatsApp has also introduced a feature called Privacy Checkup. “By selecting ‘Start Checkup’ in your privacy settings, you’ll navigate through multiple layers of privacy that enhance the security of your messages, calls, and personal information,” the company said. This provides options like “Choose who can contact you,” “Control your personal info,” “Add more privacy to your chats,” and “Add more protection to your account.”

WhatsApp also released an emotionally moving video, encouraging users to check up on friends they may be concerned about. It's a way for WhatsApp to promote key privacy features – chat locking was introduced just last month, for example.
