Google Messages: Displays contact photos in conversations

Google Messages for Android now brings contact photos, next to contact names, at the top of conversation threads. This feature is already available in most popular messaging apps, including WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Telegram , and Apple iMessage. Now you can easily identify who you’re talking to in the Google Messages app with just a glance!

Before this update, Google Messages only showed the contact's name at the top of conversations. There was also a toolbar with icons/buttons for making a video call, voice call, and search. Tapping on the contact's name would take users to the details page in the Contacts app. With the latest change, the shortcut is further emphasized. can Users now tap on either the photo or the name to see details. If you're in a group conversation, and tap on that, you'll see the group's details appear.

The photo you see in Google Messages conversations is the saved contact picture, which also appears in the main conversation list.

Most popular messaging apps offer this feature. WhatsApp, Messenger , and Telegram display the contact image on the left in conversations, while iMessage displays it in the center. All of these platforms use the profile avatar as a shortcut to the user's information.

The addition of the contact photo has brought a change to the toolbar in the chat . The image takes up extra space, so Google has now removed the search button from the toolbar. If you want to search for a specific message or keyword in a chat , you have to tap on the three vertical dots in the right corner. The toolbar still has the buttons for voice calling and video calling.

This update to Google Messages for Android follows another recent change, which tweaked “read receipts.” Instead of using words to indicate “sending,” “sent,” “delivered,” and “read,” the app now uses icons.

Additionally, a few weeks before this, Google made the RCS (Rich Communications Services) branding more prominent in Messages by replacing the use of “Chat features” with “RCS chat.”
