The factory went into lockdown in mid-October as coronavirus cases increased in Zhengzhou, the capital of Henan province.
The latest COVID-19 mini-lockdown was predicted to cause iPhone production to drop by 30%. But then Chinese authorities imposed a week-long lockdown due to a surge in cases.
Now, analyst Kuo says his latest research into supply chain sources indicates that Foxconn plans to reduce the impact by moving its production away from China.
“As a result,” Kuo continues, “iPhones manufactured by Foxconn in India will increase by at least 150% year-on-year in 2023.”.

Kuo predicts that "within the next few years," Foxconn will ship 40-45% of iPhones from India, a huge increase from current levels of 2-4%.
At the same time as it faces a lockdown, Foxconn has also seen workers walk out of its Zhengzhou factory due to poor working conditions. The company has delayed its seasonal workforce reduction and quadrupled bonuses to try to retain staff.

Foxconn is the world's largest electronics manufacturer and manufactures products for some of the world's largest technology companies, including Apple, Dell, HP , and Google.

Foxconn was founded in 1974 by Terry Gou as a manufacturer of electrical components. In the 1980s, Foxconn began to expand into the production of computer peripherals and mobile phones. Foxconn operates on a “build-to-order” basis, whereby customers place orders for products that are then manufactured on an assembly line at one of the company’s factories. This system allows for a fast turnaround time between the order being placed and delivery to the customer.
