“Default” settings aren’t usually beneficial to consumers. And there are 5 iPhone settings you should check.
Some features are more obvious than others, like the new method for recalling a text message. However, others are less well-known.
1. Delete unnecessary text
Unwanted calls can be blocked by service providers, but messages are a different story.
If you're tired of receiving fake notifications and other unwanted messages on your phone, follow the steps below to stop them.
Here's how you can block a number from sending you messages:
- At the top of a message conversation, tap either the contact's name or number.
- To block a caller, tap Info and scroll down to find the Block this caller.
You can go a step further by filtering messages from unknown senders. The Messages app will send messages from anyone not in your contact list to the Unknown Senders. Here's how you can do this:
- Click Settings , then select Messages.
- Turn on the Filter unknown senders.
Bonus tip: Unknown or spam messages can be reported to Apple. To report the message as spam and delete it, tap Report Spam , then Delete and Report Spam.
2. Avoid all forms of tracking
Your data—including your browsing habits, what you like and share online, the ads you click on, and even the items in your shopping cart—is not secure. information can be sold to other businesses or used for advertising purposes.
It's a good idea to make sure you have Safari 's Restrictions feature enabled :
- Go to Settings>Safari.
- Enable the “ Prevent Cross-Site Tracking ” option under the “ Privacy and Security ” heading. If it’s already green, you’re good to go!

3. Get rid of that annoying person who won't leave you alone
To block someone through your contacts:
- First open Contacts , then tap the name of the person you want to block.
- Tap Block this caller. To block a contact, tap Block contact.
To block someone using the Messages app:
- To open a conversation in the Messages app, tap it.
- Tap the name, number, or profile picture at the top of the screen.
- Below the contact, tap the info button.
- Scroll down and select “Block this caller” > “Block contact”.
4. Browse the web without worrying about who might be watching you
The Safari browser has a feature called Private Browsing, which is similar to Incognito in other browsers. While it doesn't keep everything private, using this security measure has some advantages:
- Browsing in private mode means that your history is not saved and the websites you visit are not shared with other devices.
- Safari doesn't store data about the pages you visit, your web searches, or your AutoFill information.

5. Protect the lock screen
- To change your passcode, go to Settings > Face ID > Passcode (on an iPhone with Face ID) or Touch ID > Passcode (on an iPhone with a Home button).
- When prompted, enter the four-digit passcode.
- Under Allow access when locked, choose which options can appear on the lock screen. Options for this include Notification Center and Control Center, among others. To keep your notifications private, turn off Notification Center.
