First details about the Intel NUC 13 Extreme and Shrike Bay Element

Details leaked about the Intel NUC 13 Extreme Raptor Lake and the Raptor Canyon Mini PC that will bring the Shrike Bay Compute Element.

Intel will release the 13th generation Raptor Lake desktop processors later this year and it appears the company also plans to release the next‑generation NUC 13 Extreme Mini PC along with the platform. The leaked documents come from Intel's NUC subreddit (via @Harukaze5719) showing what we will have in the next generation NUC.

Starting with the details, the next‑generation Intel NUC 13 system will be called Raptor Canyon, which took its name from the «Raptor Lake»» chips that will appear in it. The NUC 13 Extreme «Raptor Canyon»» will feature an unlocked 13th‑generation «K»» SKU, such as the Intel Core i9-13900K, Core i7-13700K and Core i5-13600K. The NUC will also support a PCIe x16 graphics card (Gen 5 standard) and will be housed in a 13.9‑liter chassis, which is >50% larger than the existing Eden Bay Compute Element.

Intel will definitely be shipping its own Arc discrete graphics cards with the NUC 13 Extreme systems, as those will be available by then, but users will also have the option to use either AMD or NVIDIA. Considering that Intel's existing NUC 12 Extreme already has Gen 5 PCIe x16 support, we can expect that to carry over to the next generation as well, but it's not confirmed whether we'll get any Gen 5 M.2 SSD functionality since the Raptor Lake processors don't have dedicated Gen 5 M.2 lanes, but rather will be shared with the discrete GPU lanes. The CPU will feature two Gen 4x4 lanes for M.2 devices.

The NUC 13 Extreme 'Raptor Canyon' Mini PC will feature the latest NUC 13 Extreme Compute Element codenamed Shrike Bay. Once again, the latest compute element will support all of the Raptor Lake Unlocked 'K' and 'KF' series chips. It will be interesting to see if the previous-generation Eden Bay Compute Element that houses the 12th-generation Alder Lake will be compatible with the newer Raptor Lake chips, given that they use the same socket and the desktop processors have been confirmed to be interoperable.

Intel NUC 13 Extreme Mini computers are expected to be released in the fourth quarter of 2022, which means that Raptor Lake will definitely launch before that, so expect a 13th‑generation desktop CPU in early Q4 followed by NUC 13 systems at the end of the third quarter ’22.
