Lenovo's new ThinkPads will feature Snapdragon processors & 165 Hz displays

Lenovo is releasing new ThinkPads, and it looks like they're going to be exciting. They'll include an all-new ThinkPad X13s powered by Snapdragon chips, a fifth-generation ThinkPad X1 Extreme with a 165Hz WQXGA display option, and new additions to the P-series and T-series.

What caught our attention was the shape of the screen. A few months ago, Lenovo said that this year a large part of its portfolio would move to the 16:10 aspect ratio. It seems that the company is keeping its word. Generally speaking, the new models are 16:10.

Some news that's a little more... interesting is the all-new ThinkPad X13s, which is the first laptop to feature the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 computing platform. Qualcomm had claimed the platform would have "60 percent better performance per watt" than competing x86 platforms and "multi-day battery life." The company has also touted AI improvements, including better autofocus, auto white balance, and auto exposure for video calls. This will be an interesting system to test, as we've seen mixed results with battery life and performance from the 8cx Gen 2. These kinds of chips are generally found in devices that prioritize thinness and lightness over high performance.

Aside from the processor, another feature of the X13 we want to highlight is its portability. At 2.3 pounds, it doesn't compare to the lightest ThinkPads we've ever seen, but it's still pretty light for a laptop. There's no fan (which probably helps with the size and weight), but the Snapdragon chips are designed to be quite efficient without heavy-duty cooling.

Several parts of the chassis also incorporate recycled materials, including the top and bottom covers, which are 90 percent recycled magnesium. This has had no material impact on the X13's build quality – it's as sturdy and well-made as any ThinkPad laptop.

The big news on the workstation front is the ThinkPad X1 Extreme. This powerful multimedia machine is powered by Intel's 12th Gen Core i9 H-series processors that support Intel's vPro platform. It also has a 165Hz 16:10 display option for the first time (there's also a 4K offering).

T14s

The T-series and P-series are equipped with 16:10 displays and full-width FHD cameras. They also feature new Intel processors, with the T-series also available with AMD. Both series come in 14-inch and 16-inch models.

Pricing and availability are a bit unusual. Here's the schedule: the P-series models and Intel T-series models will launch in April, with prices ranging from $1,399 to $1,419. The X13s (starting at $1,099) will follow in May, as will the AMD T14 ($1,399). Then, in June, will come the X1 Extreme Gen 5 ($2,049) and the rest of the AMD T-series models ($1,299).
