This update includes fixes for L2TP VPN connection issues that arose from the January 2022 updates and were later fixed in out-of-band updates.

As part of this update, Microsoft is also releasing a new "Sync Your Settings" feature for easier migration to Windows 11.

"Adds a new feature called Sync Your Settings for users migrating to Windows 11, Home Edition," the KB5009596 release notes explain.

«You will use Sync Your Settings to automatically create backups of a list of your apps to your Microsoft account. Then you can quickly restore those apps on a Windows 11 device, initial release. This new feature will be rolled out over the next few weeks.»

The preview of the cumulative update KB5009596 is part of Microsoft’s monthly “C” update for January 2022, allowing administrators to test the upcoming fixes that will be released on the February 2022 Patch Tuesday.

Unlike Patch Tuesday, “C” preview updates are optional and do not include security updates.
