How to use dark mode in Adobe Reader?

  • Open Adobe Reader and go to Edit > Preferences (using the shortcut Ctrl + K if you prefer).
  • There, select the Accessibility in the sidebar on the left.
  • Then, look for the Document Colors Optionsat the top. There, check the Replace Document Colors , and then select Use High-Contrast colors.
  • Next to the color scheme, select White text on black from the drop-down box. This option is equivalent to dark mode and is easier on the eyes. If you want, you can also try Green text on black.
  • Once you have selected the white text on a black background, click OK to exit the Preferences window. After these changes, your PDF files should appear in dark mode.

However, you should keep in mind that dark mode only applies to text. Colors in images and other content are not affected. Therefore, this difference between dark mode for text and images can be annoying to the eyes.

If you're not happy with the way the PDF looks in dark mode, you can modify the color scheme in the same Accessibility tab in Adobe Reader mentioned above. For example, you can use the Custom Color option, with a gray background instead of black.

And if you ever open a PDF and don't want to use dark mode, you can turn this setting off. Just open Edit > Preferences again and deselect Replace Document Colors.

How to change Adobe Reader theme to dark mode

In addition to changing the colors of PDFs, Adobe Reader includes two themes for its other elements (such as its home page and menu bar). By default, these follow your system theme setting, but you can change Adobe Reader's theme if it doesn't automatically appear in dark mode.

To do this, go to View > Display Theme in the top menu bar of Adobe Reader. There, you can choose between Light Gray and Dark Gray. Dark Gray is closer to dark mode. It's not completely black, but it's the best choice for dark mode lovers.

This is independent of the above option, so you can use the dark theme for PDFs while keeping the light theme for menu items if you want.
