The very well-known French company Chanel lost in its dispute with Huawei Technologies (HWT.UL), after a top European court declared that their logos have no similarities between them.

The trademark office emphasizes how luxury brands zealously protect their logos and trademarks, which often symbolize luxury, style, and exclusivity to millions of people worldwide.
The dispute dates back to 2017 when Huawei sought approval from the EU Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), a trademark agency, to register a trademark for computer hardware whose design consists of two vertically interconnected semicircles.

Chanel objected, stating that the design was similar to its registered French logo (the two horizontally interlinked semicircles) used for perfumes, cosmetics, jewelry, leather goods and clothing.
In 2019, the trademark office rejected Chanel's objection, stating that there is no similarity and no likelihood of confusion in the public's mind.
Subsequently, the French company challenged the decision at the Luxembourg General Court, which on Wednesday rejected the appeal of its decision.
“The disputed logos are not similar. The marks must be compared as they were filed for application and registration, without changing their orientation”, the court said.

The court said that the visual differences between the two logos are significant. “Specifically, Chanel's marks have more rounded curves, thicker lines and a horizontal orientation, whereas the orientation of the Huawei mark is vertical. Consequently, the General Court concludes that the logos are different”, it said.
