Smart devices: time to rethink online security

Smart deviceshave made our lives much easier, especially considering the demanding pace of our daily lives. Especially in cases where we work long hours outside the home, they can save time and effort.

However, it is not only the advantages that we need to think about, as there are also several risks that accompany the comfort they offer us.

Security researchers often face many challenges when it comes to securing the data of users who own smart devices, as smart technology often exposes them to risk.

Revenue from smart device technologyis expected to reach $85 billion in 2020, up 4% from last year. And within the next 12 months, more than 80 million U.S. plan to purchase some type of smart home device. By 2026, the smart device market is expected to generate revenue of $317 billion, up 5% from pre- COVID-19.

And as the number of devices increases, so do the risks they pose to the security of personal data. Malicious actors are increasingly targeting these devices, which can contain highly confidential information about a home and family members, as well as other information such as passwords, emails, and more.

A hacker using a smart device to steal this data wouldn't have much trouble. Due to high demand, some smart home devices are being released without adequate security measures, and many come with inadequate user manuals. Furthermore, if an attacker can gain access to one device, they can likely gain access to all of them connected to the same network.

Smart devices: time to rethink online security

It is difficult for a user to know when the smart device they use at home is safe, so it is a good idea to follow the following tips:

Choose trusted brands. If you’re looking to add a smart device to your home, choose a well-known and trusted brand. Prioritize products made by brands with a history of providing quality protection. Devices created by startups or lesser-known brands may be more affordable, but you’re usually sacrificing the security of your data.

Change passwords frequently. As tedious as it may sound, frequently changing passwords on smart devices is a great way to keep your data safe.

Secure your network. Your home Wi-Fi network is the gateway to your data, so set a password for your modem or router. Don't rely on default passwords for your smart home devices either, as they're easier for experienced hackers.

Make purchases with a credit card. Connect all smart home devices that require a credit card as a payment method. In the event your device is compromised, a credit card provides additional protection. It's easier to avoid charges you didn't authorize. Debit cards, prepaid cards, or gift cards don't offer the same protection as a credit card.
