Ransomware: accounts for one-third of attacks against organizations

In our time, companies and their employees can fall victim to many cyberattacks, but the malware that continues to be a particular problem for most is ransomware. A report released by Positive Technologies has ranked ransomware as one of the most widespread attacks against organizations.

ransomware

According to a report by Positive Technologies, more than a third (34%) of cyberattacks in the first quarter of the year were ransomware. The most common were Sodinokibi, Maze, and DoppelPaymer.

The organizations most targeted were government agencies. Other industries that fell victim to such attacks included science and education, healthcare, and industrial companies.

There was also an increase in ransomware, where attackers threatened to leak data if victims did not pay the ransom. In these cases, the attackers even created their own websites where they published the stolen information. Criminals using Maze, Sodinokibi, Nemty, DoppelPaymer, Nefilim, CLOP and Sekhmet now have their own websites.

Many of the attacks were successful because attackers were able to exploit vulnerabilities and unpatched systems. This is partly due to the fact that many companies have tried to move their employees' work from home due to the pandemic, without paying the necessary attention to security.

In early 2020, one of the most notorious ransomware of recent months, Snake, appeared, which can delete shadow copies of data and stop processes related to the operation of industrial control systems. Snake leaves a note on the victim's computer telling them what to do.

To protect organizations and employees from ransomware and other forms of malware, Positive Technologies offers some tips.
