Microsoft's Search Indexer causes high disk usage

Indexer

Microsoft recently released Insider Build 19025 (20H1), which contains an algorithm that fixes the shortcomings of the Search Indexer in Windows 10 .

In 2018, some Insidersdisabled the Search Indexer on their devices. When Microsoft reached out to them about why this happened, users reported that the main reasons for disabling the tool were high disk usage, high CPU usage, general performance issues, and low perceived value.

So after that, Microsoft moved on to address the performance issues caused by Windows Search. With Build 19H1, the company added some useful features, such as Enhanced mode that covers locally stored files and folders.

Indexer was already powering search features in apps like Outlook, Timeline , etc. and now it also powers the search bar in file explorer.

Among other things, Microsoft also introduced an algorithm in Insider Build 18945 (20H1) to address the problems related to high disk usage. The purpose was to detect high disk usage and then slow down or temporarily disable the Indexer, if necessary.

The algorithm will look for signs such as whether gaming mode or power saving mode is enabled , whether CPU usage exceeds 80%, whether disk usage exceeds 70%, and so on.

As Microsoft now points out, thanks to the new algorithm, the “excessive disk usage” and the “general performance problems” have now ceased to be one of the main reasons that force users to disable the Indexer on their device.

However, the algorithm still needed further improvements, which were made within the 20H1 builds. The Insider Build 19025 brings an improved version of the algorithm that “detects high disk usage activity, so that it can better detect peak hours and manage the Indexer accordingly”.

All these changes will become evident in the upcoming Windows 10 update, which is scheduled to be released in the first half of 2020.
