Chromebook AUE: When does your system expire?

Do you use a Chromebook? Below we will see when it expires. This is something every Windows user should understand. However, the big difference between Google and Microsoft is that the former has the expiration date before the machine is sold.

Microsoft arbitrarily decides when support for a particular chip ends – and the company's decision is announced after the device's initial release.

Chromebooks

Chromebook ads usually list the AUE expiration date. However, if you don't know your Chromebook's expiration date, it's easy to look it up. Google has an easily accessible list of computers along with their expiration dates.

But what is the expiration date?

Every Chromebook has an “Auto Update Expiration (AUE) Date” and it refers to the date that Google will support the operating system that your computer “wears”.

If you can't find a specific Chromebook model name with the expiration date in the list, you can use the following method:

Open your Chromebook and Chrome, at the internal address chrome://version.

Where it says Platform, look at the end of the codename. For example, it might say “stable channel snappy”. Then open the page, and search for the codename that your system has. You will find your computer brand and the AUE expiration date.

Please note that after the AUE expiration date, youcan continue to use your Chromebook, but your operating system will not be updated.

The device will display a notification like this:

This device will no longer receive the latest software updates. Consider upgrading.

Security is an issue, although the Chromebook is one of the most secure devices out there thanks to the app sandboxing and other techniques Google uses.

So although there is an issue it seems to be less serious than it would be, for example, on a Windows computer.
