Cloudflare today announced its first consumer product aimed at making the web more private and secure.
The company has created a new public DNS service that is supposed to protect users from web surveillance while speeding up their online experience.
And no, it’s not an April Fool’s Day prank.
DNS resolution services give computers the IP addresses they need to access servers using their domains. In other words, it’s what turns the domain secnews.gr into the information (IP) needed to show you the website.
Because DNS is essentially a roadmap for every computer’s connection to servers, we can learn a lot about a user’s behavior from the information that leaks through DNS. That’s one of the reasons Cloudflare chose to make the new service available, according to co-founder and CEO Matthew Prince.
Cloudflare is supporting DNS over HTTPS,an approach that will make us more secure.
“We came to the conclusion that the only way is to run a reliable DNS service, in addition to serving content producers, as a service for consumers,” Prince said.
On the privacy side, Prince said that the company will delete all logs of the service and will not keep any of the IP addresses of people who access the service.
Users interested in trying the new service can click on 1.1.1.1 to find the necessary DNS configuration instructions depending on the operating system they are using.
